Hi all, wanted to let you know this is a great forum, very informative giving great background to many great cars racing today and previously, pics and race reports. I was wanting to know how the mid mount engines are removed from the cars for maintenance seeing the engines are set so far back? Having read in previous threads the mention of torque tubes connecting the engine to the trans axle I am keen to know if the shaft is exposed or covered, clutch location, uni joints etc? Anyone able to help with pics or explanations would be appreciated, Sedanfan.

Hi,

We are far from experts and very new to building a sports sedans... have gone the option of having a removable front windscreen, and pulling the engine out that way. But saying that the body takes 5 minutes to take off to make it even easier... on the other car the whole front end bolts off with the engine attached.

Have a look at mark nelsons car on my105, you can see part of his torque tube that covers the tail shaft.

Good question sedanfan, wouldn't mind a bit of info on how other people have dodged this difficulty.

Cheers.

How its removed I guess will be pretty dependent on how the space frame is constructed. Some cars use the front of the engine to mount the front suspension frame assembly off so you'd pretty much
have to pull off the front end on those cars to get the engine out. I have seen other cars where most of the frame work for the front suspension sits pretty low so the motor can be removed without dis-assembly of the front end. They usually have removable lower window frame sections though.

I have seen some cars where the shaft is covered up in a large diameter tube ( the Irvin RX7 has that)
Other like the Jameson Jaguar have it exposed (well it did the last time I looked!). A lot of cars I have looked at run the clutch in the rear.
