Looking at Racing in sport sedans

Postby Datsun21 » Sat Mar 17, 2012 12:18 pm

Hi guys I am looking at shipping my car from nz to oz and am considering Sport sedans racing
Is there a queensland series ?? I cant find a forum for queensland

The Car is a datsun 1600 with a fj20 turbo in it - approx 500 hp 850 kg .
how do you think it will go ?? ( for the purpose of this conversation lets just assume that I can actualy drive the thing ) will I be tail end charlie all the time or is there other cars around this kind of spec ??
are there classes within sports sedan ?
Do turbo's have to run the dreaded restrictor ???
where can I find the rule and regs?

I realise most are space frame 700 hp wings and slicks weapons. I am under no illusions that Im am be able to have a dust up with those boys .
I am just hoping there are some guys further down the field that are keen to " adjust my mirrors " and sign my door with a big fat tyre mark.

I thought about the under 2l class - but adding a restrictor and re-engineering the motor so I can throw away 200 hp . then intentionaly adding
400 odd kg just goes against all that is holy and sacred in motorsport !!!

Any help ,advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Hey datsun21, welcome aboard..... Mate speak to chris donnelly (falconel) in regards to qld state series, in regards of the rules there wouldbe plenty of turbo buffs on this forum who wouldbe able to answer your boost and restriction questions... The best thing about sports sedans is that no matter what car/engine combo you always have someone who has relatively the same speed as you to race against, such a vast variety of car and engines thats what makes this class so special... Hopefully you make the right decision to join this great class of ours...

Hi Datsun21,

Please find below a calendar of Queensland and National Sports Sedan events
for Season 2012.

24 - 26 February Bathurst NSW (Exhibition Event)
10 - 11 March Morgan Park QLD (QSC Round 1 MGCCQ)
13 - 15 April Mallala SA (Shannons Nationals)
25 - 27 May Phillip Island VIC (Shannons Nationals)
9 - 10 June Morgan Park QLD (QSC Round 2 QRDA)
13 - 15 July Eastern Creek NSW (Shannons Nationals)
10 - 12 August Queensland Raceway QLD (Shannons Nationals)
1 - 2 September Morgan Park QLD (QSC Round 3 WDSCC)
12 - 14 October Wakefield Park NSW (Shannons Nationals)
17 - 18 November Morgan Park QLD (QSC Round 4 WDSCC or MGCCQ)

As you can see, 2012 sees a return to QLD Raceway at the Shannons Nationals
Round in August, which gives us a bit of variety in the calendar, and
amazingly there are no conflicts between our State and National events!!!
Without the conflicts, hopefully we can get a few more cars on the grids on
a more regular basis!

As in 2011, the QRDA (QLD Sports Sedan Association) will be paying a bulk entry fee to NASSA for the QLD
Raceway event, all in the name of keeping the Entry Fee to a minimum for the
State guys! This meeting provides the best bang for buck around. Three 20
minute practice sessions, on Friday, two x 25 minute Qualifying sessions on
Saturday and three (longer than normal) races on the Sunday. The Kerrick
Sports Sedans are also a Televised category, so for your entry dollar, you
are getting an absolute bargain!!

In answer to your questions, with regard to a forum - the National Sports Sedan Association forum is the one we use for Sports Sedan related communication.

There is a place for you in Sports Sedans, not everyone runs a 700HP V8. As for classes, depending on numbers we usually run 0-2000cc, 2001-4000cc and 4001-6000cc classes at State Championship Level. It is possible to win a State of Club Championship in a lesser powered car as proven by Tony Cox back in 2010 when he won the QLD Championship in his Holden Gemini with 2-Litre Toyota Turbo power.

As mentioned by drewowner13 above, the regulations can be found in the CAMS Manual http://www.camsmanual.com.au/02_race.asp , no restrictors are required for Turbos, but you are limited to a maximum of 6000cc displacement after Turbo (or Multi Valve if applicable) multiplication factor is applied.

Please feel free to email me on chris@qrda.asn.au if you have any further questions.

Regards,
Chris Donnelly.
