problems with mobil 1

Postby MrBoost » Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:25 pm

hey guys

has anyone had problems with mobil 1 synthetic? as alot of you know we have had alot of oil pressure problems with the new engine. the thing is at 3000rpm it has 100psi. and the pressure stays good for a few laps then it just drops off. we thought the tank might be running out of oil so we may need another scavenge on the oil pump. however 2 people have now told us they have had experience of mobil 1 synthetic 'foaming' up. 1 top running fellow said he blew 5 chevs up and since he changed from mobil 1 hasnt blown another engine......

any thoughts or experience?

i have always tried to use castrol myself, but that is only because that is my preference, whether it be normal or synthetic. But I haven't heard that, but would not surprise me tho.

problems with mobil 1

Hey Boost
When we got our car the guy we bought it off stipulated that we must use Mobil 1. He also told us he was continually changing bearings, especially cam bearings as the engine was inherintleny bad on them.
After doing a few bearings in the first season we redesigned the oil system and still had the same problem.
Someone suggested the same oil problem as you mentioned, so we changed to ordinary mineral oil (Penrite) and have not had an oil/bearing problem in 3 years.
I still had 20 litres of Mobil 1 left in the shed so i used it in the lawnmower. Two weekends of grass cutting and we were up for a new Briggs and Stratton.
Still trying to find a good use for the last 19 litres. Anyone have any suggestions?
It may not be the answer to your problems but it's well worth a try. There are quite a few guys down here in Victoria with similar stories..
Good Luck!

thanks loser

dad is a machine, the engine is apart and crank came back today so id say he is down there now putting it back together.
i hate to think its the oils fault but its sounding like it is and it actually fits all the problems we have had....

putting a bigger oil pump on never the less tho.

hi Boost, I believe the turbo serria's in Aus had problems with all types of oil, and the only oil allegedly to keep them together was Castrol Formula R, good luck on finding the right oil for your application.

Try Motul 300V 20-60 Competition or Le Mans. Full synthetic ester based, we have been using and selling this great stuff for 4 years now. My own 13B turbo lasts 2 years without a pull down, Pulled out bearings on Bob Mc Laughlans chev Sports sedan after 2 years and look like new. Oil pressure is at 75 PSI. Oil temp is 20 deg cooler. Have had peoblems with dry sump pump but nothing to do with oil. Change oil evry meeting

Whee is your pressure guage located, on the way in to the engine or in the engine itself?

I used to have a pressure drop off years ago and it was normal as we were measureing from near the end of the oil path. Changed to entry point into the engine and it stays rock solid.

Why 100PSI. Seems to be very high, we only use about 70psi hot. Yes it is higher when it is cold but that is also normal.

Finally we only use mineral base oil (Hi Tec). The V8's do not like synthetic oil as they need some drag to work the roller followers according to my engine builder.

we had it screwed up to be safe than sorry. we normally run the rule of thumb 10psi per thousand revs. (hot)

trying some different avenues now. looking for design problems with the engine such as internal oil feed lines.
