New diffuser rules

What are the new safety rules for 2007 that are different to the earlier 2006 rules?
If I know these I can then check my car.

Hi Stefan
May i suggest you test your car against the current rules . http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/02_race/d_3rd_Category/RA22_Group_3D_Q210.pdf
Anything you find non-compliant you will need to check against 2006 rules. You may have to ring cam's as to where to find the 2006 rules. I still have not found them on the s h i t cams web site.
Driver side door intrusion cross bars are a definite change. Window net mounting has changed
but i think all cars are probably expected to compile with those changes.
good luck and if you find the archived rules let me know.

Hi Ricey

Just foundthe 2007 rules on the Cams Manual wed site under archives at the bottom of the list
on the left side of the screen. So far they only go back to 2007.Going through my old books tonight
I have just found a 2005 manual, so by comparing all of the years together I should get a good idea.

New diffuser rules

Hi Stefan , just reading the comments above . I had a look at several copies of the rules from precious years , & the current one i just downloaded is the only one which states that the car must fully comply with the 07 rules . Previous copies dont have that paragaph??

Regardless it certainly dosent say that you have to be re-log booked , simply that you comply .

On that basis we need to identify where a car differs , & the main area I can see is the safety upgrades mentioned above . We took advantage of the new rules several years ago , with diffusers & non opening doors etc , but we also put the extra work int the safety rules regarding side impact protection, by reworking the intrusion bars in the 2.5mm wall tube .Its detailed in section 4 .2 - 4 & details the 2.5mm wall tubing & crossovers to be used for anti intrusion . There were also some additions regarding vehicle exit time due to the non opening door option , which is detailed in section 3.6 - 4 . Make sure you can demonstrate exits in the given times .
There is also a section regarding impact absorbing material in section 3.7-5 , however its strangely worded as it says " a crushable structure MAY be added " . May certainly isnt mandatory . We however added a 100mm thick cavity on the drivers door filled with high density fire proof foam , which is similar consistency to crash helmet foam fill .
I feel safer with it there .
Theres also another section in 5.2 regarding the fuel tank , if it is at the rear of the car , it once again MAY be required have a crushable structure to protect it ?????

Thats about all I had to modify , but its dependant on your current cars construction so have a close look .

Once you comply I see no reason why you could not begin to adopt the improvements allowed in the new rules .

As a final point , shortly after i made the upgrades to the side impact intrusion , i had the biggest drivers door Tee boning I have ever had which tore the side out of the car .
Have a look at the pic below & tell me if you think the new rules are a good thing to upgrade your car too before you begin further mods .

Chris

New diffuser rules

From what I can see after a quick look and the above comments it seems to be the cross intrustion bars and
a cross brace across the top of the cage under the roof. These I will definitly have done, I currently only have
a single intrusion bar on the drivers side. And I will look into the impact absorbing material.

Stefan,

You definitely need two intrusion bars on the drivers door at all times. Meaning when they cross in the middle is only one bar in total. This is why the "X" in the side intrusion bars is often "boxed" with 2.5mm wall section. I have done it different by adding another bar in the "X", but I am yet to be log booked to approve it (missed my goal date).

New diffuser rules

Postby Toyzda » Tue Jul 31, 2012 9:12 am

Hi guys,

I have been doing a new rear end in my car, I have been trying to work out a rear exit exhaust with the diffuser.

The rule states the cutout for each cannot be above the centreline of the rear wheels. Does this mean the exhaust can exit into the diffuser as long as it is exiting at the rear (a blown diffuser?) and not into a tunnel?

I am also confused on the wording "undertray / diffuser" in the rules. Does this mean the diffuser can start where the undertray does (back of the sills) or can the diffuser only replace the "incline from centreline of rear wheels" rule?

Thanks

Michael

One extra thing to note

General requirments for cars and drivers
Schedule B

10. fitted with sideways or rearward-facing exhaust outlets. If rearwards, the outlet/s shall be between 100mm
and 450mm above the ground and shall not protrude more than 150mm beyond the rearmost portion of the
automobile. If directed sideways, the outlet/s must be located rearward of the midpoint of the wheelbase.
In any case, they shall not project beyond the maximum width of coachwork or terminate more than 50mm
within the plan view of the adjacent coachwork;

Ricey i know you are savvy with understanding the rule book, so what is your take on the "blown diffuser" legality? I can't see any reason why you couldn't do it in the current rules. But i maybe reading them wrong??

I realise i can go out the side of the car (was doing that originally) but i don't want to if i can go out the rear, especially if I can exit into the diffuser area.

What is your reading of the undertray / diffuser seperation? Can the whole rear boot replacement undertray be the diffuser?

Anyone going else going to add their 2 cents?

The rule to me reads that you can replace the WHOLE rear undertray with a diffuser meaning it can start from behind the sills.

The no holes in the floor rule doesn't apply to the diffuser, so can you run a "blown diffuser"?

I notice a certain FAST Alfa has the exhaust exiting out the back.

Maybe that's the secret why it goes so damn quick! ;)
