Radiators

Postby Htc Motorsport » Mon Aug 09, 2010 2:20 pm

Does anyone know if there is a formula for working out the size of the radiator you need in a Sports Sedan. I have fitted an aluminium ACE brand that measures 500mm long X 350mm high in 3 core design, 3 litre V6 turbo engine with plenty of airflow in front of it through the tunnel to the rear but the engine sits next to the driver,it has a standard water pump. Im thinking that this might not be enough. Thanks

I don't know of a formula but I am of the thinking that with a turbo engine you are better off having a bit more coolant capacity to compensate for the extra heat you get from a turbo motor i.e higher combustion/exhaust temps then with a N/A motor and the heat generated by a water cooled turbocharger.

On the s*** box I have a bit to do with we run a dual pass PWR core measuring 470 wide, 520 tall and 60mm thick and it holds a steady temp on track at around 84 degrees, bearing in mind the radiator is sitting right behind the intercooler. I suppose one benefit of a 1970s shape is the fairly large opening in the front of the car so ducting the air in is no problem.

Thanks 2002 it measures 60mm thick. I'll run it and see what happens.

Does this mean the radiator is in the front and the air exits through the back, or the radiator is on the back? The exit (heated) air is the important factor for determining core size. The better your "flow" the smaller core you can have, or a better way to say it is no flow needs a huge core...
