FJ20 turbo

Postby R TECH » Mon Sep 01, 2014 10:09 pm

Wondering if anyone on here has any experience with the FJ20 turbo engine ?

From all the searching I've done to select a engine for my sports sedan to run in 2000-4000 the FJ seems to be a great base and superior in design/reliability. Surprising it's such a old engine.. Seems 500-600hp can be made fairly straight forward with just a built bottom end (pistons/rods) std crank and a GTX3076 size turbocharger on E85.

I have experience with turbo 4 cylinder engines none with the fj.
But this much I do know the fj was desigend to be a f1 engine years ago and then nissan changed their mind. It started out as a 1500cc engine and then when it went into production as a passenger car engine it went to 2000cc
the reason Im picking is due to the fact that the ports would have been oversized for a road going engine at the 1500cc.
its a great engine and has a huge power potential.

Im not sure on your budget but you will find an rb25 gearbox will hold that back. They are rated to about 450 but thats on a drift car and they are doing clutch kicks to keep the wheels spining.
I know of a gearbox for sale for 1300 with a quick shift , throw out bearing and front of drive shaft.

im not sure about fitting it to the fj20 or if some one even makes an adaptor plate or not

Thinking Holinger RD6 alternatively will be a Supra W58 with a upgraded dog gearset.

Although RB25 box is strong I've heard a few having 3rd gear breakages when pushing decent HP 500+ and was told they don't like shifting at 8000-9000rpm ?

My engine setup should produce 500-600hp and revving to 8500rpm is the plan

Fair enough the holinger would be good.
The w58 is a good box but it has a weak first. The only upgrade I know of for them is the ppg.
Ppg gear sets are known for their ability to break under load. I reckon you got it right with the holinger
