Toyota Supra sports sedan build thread.

Postby 2JZSS » Fri Jan 28, 2011 9:25 pm

Hi Guys,

I thought that i would create a thread for the build of my JZA80 Toyota Supra sports sedan.

In this thread i will post up various photos as we complete stages of the build. I am building this car with a long time friend who happens to be a chassis builder (he will be doing the majority of the work....i'm the gofer (finally assembly / electrical etc) haha and the guy with too many ideas!!). The car isn't intended to be a mega dollar front runner but hopefully a well thought out middle range car.

The reason for the build is because i have always liked the wild style of the best tin top racers in Australia and to be able to race in the category will be a dream come true. Plus going fast is fun :).

The car will be a full space frame car with a VG30TT much to the amazement of the 2JZ crowd.

Feel free to ask any questions etc. I more than happy to answer what i can.

OK so for the last few months we have been building the body so that we are at a point to make the fibreglass moulds. Hopefully in the next week or two we will have completed this task. I will post some pics once this is more complete. Here are some half finished pics. (it's alot further along now)

Mock up of kit for test fitting

We have in the mean time been designing the cars chassis and components in the simulated world. This has allowed us to test alot of ideas that would have otherwise cost us alot of money on prototyping.

Here is a pic of the new uprights we have just had machined. All designed and tested using simulated and real world calculations.

New upright fresh outta the oven

More installments coming soon including a pic of the brakes / bearings fitted to the upright.

Cheers

The funny part is measuring at the guards its only 2 inches wider. We could go wider according to the rules but it has a nice wheel base to track width ratio as it is.

Time for some more body pics.

These pics are of the car in primer ready to be waxed and the moulds taken off the body.

The tail lights were slightly filled so we can cut them out later to get a nicer fit to the lights.

Here's the independent 9" ford housing i will be using with Porsche 930 cv stub axles, chromoly cv joints , neoprene boots etc. This will eventually mate with a jerico 5 speed dog box. Possibly with a retro fitted sequential shifter.

Yeah nadz i probably do need to change my name... not sure if i can and keep the same account. I'll give it a shot anyway!!

What were the reasons for going with the Nissan engine over the Toyota motor?

There are a few reasons ....

1. The 2JZ is a pretty long motor. With the vg30 being such a compact 60" V6 it has enabled us to move the engine further rear ward. A 2JZ in the same chassis would have had alot more weight over the front axle.

2. The 2JZ is also a tall motor.... a lot taller than a vg30. With a shorter height we can make the engine as close to the ground as possible so the CofG is as low as possible.

3. The VG30 was raced in the IMSA championship in the nissan GTP ZX and could make 1200-1500 in a qually tune and 1000 reliably. I'm not saying my car will make this power but its nice to know the engine can and will hold together at those levels. Not to say a 2JZ wont though as they are also tough as nails. I actually have data and hints and tips from one of the race mechanics who used to work for electramotive.

4. The vg30 is pretty cheap as well which enables me to either run a stocko and make 500hp which it can do on a stock bottom end or sleeve it and go nuts with it and be far cheaper because the initial outlay isnt as big as a 2JZ. Its very hard to find cheap 2JZ blocks.

5. The VG30 is a 2 valve motor so i can run in a lighter weight break and still make good power. I can also bore it out to 3498 or there abouts and run in the U3500NA category. It basically gives me options. The engine also features a crank girdle as standard and a late model forged crank slots straight in.

6. Plus i'm a bit of a turbo guy.... gotta love take off when these things spool :)

I thought it being more compact then an inline 6 would be a big part of the reason you went with the Nissan engine. The proven competition history is also a good thing to have, you'll already have a good idea of what the engine is capable of reliably handling without having to re-invent the wheel.
Thanks for sharing the background info on your build up!

off topic but the IMSA stuff is great amazing era of motorsport, I like this clip in particular but I am biased of course... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKxZIJ6BTCo&feature=related

Keep the posts coming 2JZSS.
Which other Sports Sedans run the VG30? (I think the Carling RX7 originally had one but is there any current cars)
